I've been thinking-oh my!-about churches nowadays. And how satan sure has us fooled. (You know, us church people)he seems to have us thinking that church is all about everything besides what it's supposed to be! Did that make any sense to you? Maybe it will if I explain.
Church people seem to think church is about
A. Pleasing God, and therefore we need to come up with the correct formulas in order to achieve this. Our ideas of the right formula seems to be something like this: we will go and study the law and try to perform well enough to please God. So we come up with lots of traditions, ceremonies, rules, and regulations that we deem "the law". The only problem being that Jesus came to fulfill the law, therefore we no longer have to try to perform well enough to please him. God is already pleased with us! We are his spotless bride! Not to mention most of the rules that we come up with to please God are really what pleases us. For example:You have to dress a certain way, believe the same way as we do, listen to the same music we do, have lots of money, and you better daggonwell have a job. (Yes my dad was out of a job and we were kicked out of the church because of that.)
B. The church is about how many people you can gather and therefore we must do what the people want. We have to have lots of events and fun stuff to please the people! We have to let them dress immodestly(that, by the way, wasn't the kind of dress I was talking about above, I was meaning more of a 'if you don't where an expensive suit and tie to church you're bad' kind of thing) but these people pleasing type of churches say things like "oh just let them fall in love with Jesus, we need not address these sort of things, it isn't very comfortable." Then once church leaders realize 'hey when we have lots of people in our church we get lots of money', Well then satan has lead us off on a whole new distraction from what church should really be about. Am I saying we should get caught up in judgementalism? No absolutely not, what I'm trying to get at is this: there is a hymn-and I'm too good with hymns so I may get some of the words wrong but it goes like this.
"Turn your eyes upon Jesus, look full in his wonderful face, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim, in the light of His glory and grace."
We, as the church, are letting the things of this world turn our eyes upon something else, whether it be some of the things I mentioned above as particular distractions or anything else.
The church needs to stop trying to come up with formulas of "how to do church". We don't do church we are the church! And we are already made whole in Christ! Let's turn our eyes back upon Jesus, and all these things will be added to us! Amen-so be it! (as Kenneth Copeland would say.=D)
